A worker was killed and at least six others were injured in an explosion inside a scrap iron smelter Elbasan. Reuters quotes an Interior Ministry spokesman, who said police believed the blast was caused by a hand grenade or military shell that was mistakenly thrown into the electric furnace. Albania: One dead, several wounded in smelter blast The Elbasan plant, run by Turkey's Kurum, buys scrap iron and melts it to produce steel. "It was thrown into the furnace and exploded. Part of the furnace has been destroyed," said a local journalist, speaking to Reuters by telephone from the site. The shell could be one of the hundreds of thousands of weapons and ammunition stolen when military depots were looted in 1997 as protests about a pyramid investment scam turned violent and the country plunged into anarchy. Police have not yet established how the explosive found its way to the furnace and could not comment on whether this was an accident or a deliberate act.
