Serbia won't build border walls, official reiterates
"It is out of the question for Serbia to be raising walls and wire, as this would not lead to a solution," Gojkovic said during at a joint press conference with Slovenian counterpart Milan Brglez. Her comments came a day after Slovenia announced it was building a fence along its border with Croatia.
According to Gojkovic, 370,000 migrant have passed through Serbia so far, and "an even bigger wave is expected." It is understandable, she continued, that every country faced with the migrant problem is looking for ways to protect its interests - but she "expects from the EU that we together find a common solution."
"Separate solutions will not solve the causes of this crisis," said Gojkovic.
She added that Serbia pays "all the costs, 90 percent" related to the migrant crisis from its state budget.
Asked whether the country would opt to build border walls, Gojkovic said that would "not solve anything, because people from the Middle East would certainly be looking for a way to reach Western Europe."
"For now is not a problem for us to, as a transit country, provide for these people," said the Serbian parliament speaker.
Turning to the issue of EU integrations, Gojkovic said that Serbia was "extremely satisfied" with the EC progress report, which was published yesterday.
She "stressed that Europe is whole only if includes all countries on the continent" - as that is "the only way it will be able to provide the right answers to the challenges it faces."
