DSS party has new leader
After the vote, Rašković-Ivić said that her first steps would be to democratize and decentralize the party by changing its statute and invited Miloć Aligrudić, the runner-up, to join her team, the Beta news agency reported. The DSS was created in 1992 from a faction that broke off from the Democratic Party (DS), and was led by Vojislav Koštunica until March when he stepped down following the party's failure to win seats in parliament.
The DSS rose to power in 2000, as part of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) when Koštunica defeated Slobodan Milošević to become president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). He also served twice as Serbia's prime minister between 2004 and 2008.
The party has been in opposition since 2008. It opposes Serbia's accession to the EU and wants Serbia to pull out of the membership talks, the agency said.
