"Kosovo expected to remain stumbling block"

He added that he hoped that they would be completed in the next ten years.

It has always been clear to us that Serbia is a part of Europe, he said, but pointed that after decades of communism there are deficiencies that need to be corrected on the way to the EU.

The deficiencies are primarily economic and democratic, he said, as well as corruption.

"We need a true democracy where decisions are made by citizens and not by mafia, big business or foreign powers. A country vying to join the EU should also achieve economic prosperity and secure employment," stressed Melzer.

He pointed out that the major stumbling block is the Kosovo issue and its resolution, which does not depend on Serbia but on the European partners.

The Austrian MEP holds that the justified historical interests of Serbia must be taken into account and that the Serbs in Kosovo must be given the right to self-determination.

He also believes that Kosovo cannot achieve economic sustainability.

"I know that Serbia has to largely overcome its pride, but on the other hand, the Europeans should also view this issue realistically. Kosovo must not be allowed to become the center of Islamization of Europe, which would only serve the interests of the U.S.," stressed the Austrian politician.

He noted that borders must be changed, which would refer to the Serb part of Kosovo, and pointed to the possibility of cantonal solutions in the course of the EU enlargement process.

Speaking of Serbia, Melzer expressed hope that the upcoming early elections would strengthen the patriotic and pro-European forces.

Asked what Serbia could bring to the EU, Melzer replied that Belgrade could contribute to the cooperation between Russia and the European Union through its contacts with Moscow.
