Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic has assessed that Pristina’s position would strengthen if Serbia gave up on its EU integration. He added that it would also encourage those who support Kosovo’s independence. "Serbia should not give up on EU integration" The deputy PM stressed that it would give leverage to countries that had recognized Kosovo to try to persuade others to do so. “Giving up on Serbia’s EU accession would not minimize problems in Kosovo,” Djelic said and pointed out that Serbia’s EU integration enabled rational and peaceful solving of some problems in Kosovo. “The European Commission has now imposed obligations to make progress in the dialogue on Kosovo as well, which increases its prospects for success,” he told daily Kurir. The deputy prime minister noted that the EU candidate status opened new EU funds for agriculture, regional development and human resources development. Djelic said that Serbia, as a EU member state, could get around EUR 10bn for agriculture in a period of seven years. “Compared to our agricultural budget of EUR 250mn a year, this is an enormous, crucial amount for this strategic sector,” he concluded.
