German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met with representatives of Serbian parliamentary parties in Belgrade on Thursday. A statement from the meeting said that the German official said that Serbia has a clear European perspective and that the economic crisis will not jeopardize the EU enlargement process. German minister meets with parties Officials of the Democratic Party (DS), the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), G17 Plus, the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who attended a working lunch with Westerwelle, told Tanjug that they assured the German foreign minister that Serbia is fully committed to joining the EU, but also wants to protect its national and state interests. SPS leader Ivica Dacic said that the tone of the conversation was cordial, and that it is evident that all parties in Serbia are committed to the continued protection of national and state interests and also to European integration. "There was no talk about the positions on Serbia's resolution on Kosovo-Metohija, as that topic will be discussed with Serbia's top officials," Dacic briefly noted. "We expressed readiness to make European integration the priority of Serbia's policy, and as far as Serbia's resolution on Kosovo is concerned I presented my party's view that Serbia should do everything to harmonize the text with the EU, in order to get the broadest support possible," said G17 deputy leader Suzana Grubjesic. SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic noted that this was an opportunity to present views on the current situation in Serbia, and that he is not optimistic about the possibilities for success of Serbia's resolution before the UN. LDP leader Cedomir Jovanovic said that the old differences among the parties surfaced again at this meeting but that the important thing is that the gap is shrinking, even though other parties called for understanding by offering new arguments in favor of old policies, which Jovanovic said was the wrong way to go.
