Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac says the economic crisis will affect the defense system, but added that it will not stop army reforms this year. "Reforms can be implemented even without money in certain segments. It is only difficult to buy arms without money. The crisis will not stop reforms in certain segments, it may slow it down a bit, but we will abide by the plans concerning the reform and professionalization of the army for this year," Sutanovac said in a program on national broadcaster RTS. "Crisis won't stop army reform" According to Sutanovac, the professionalization of the army should be completed by 2011, noting that more money will be needed for professionalization only in the first year, while afterward it will take less money than for the existing military system in Serbia. Asked about army real estate, Sutanovac said this year will not be suitable for the sale of those properties, because prices will go down, "which will suit the majority of citizens, but not us who have a surplus of real estate and I do not want to be remembered as the minister who sold out the army properties." Speaking about the Hague tribunal indictees, Sutanovac stressed that the army had nothing to do with "protecting" the indictees, but added that he could not guarantee that some retired members of the army do not have contacts with the indictees.
