Arresting Ratko Mladic would be the best proof that Serbia accepts European values, says Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen. Speaking to Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti, Verhagen in this way confirmed that the Netherlands remains adamant that Serbia must bring about the arrest of Mladic before Brussels will give the green light for any resumption of European integration. Mladic arrest remains condition Asked what would happen if Mladic were found outside of Serbia, Verhagen answered that the responsibility for locating, arresting and extraditing Mladic lies with Serbia, and not with international community, which, he says, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has admitted. Verhagen believes that full cooperation with the court in The Hague would demonstrate loyalty to international law and basic values which EU countries share, whose standards Serbia, as a potential member of the European family, must satisfy. He says that despite that condition, the Netherlands is favorably inclined toward Serbia’s future of European integration. Verhagen explained that his country does not accept the idea that the EU send a mission to Serbia to ascertain the degree of its cooperation with the Hague as only the tribunal's prosecutor has the funding and mandate to do that.
