"Serbia will never trade Kosovo"

Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic says that Serbia will "never swap Kosovo for EU membership". "Serbia will never trade with our southern province. Should, God forbid, someone put this choice before us, we will choose Kosovo. This is very clear," Djelic told the daily Politika in an interview published today. "Serbia will never trade Kosovo" The minister at the same time stressed that "no EU official has ever in any way" asked Serbia to recognize Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence in order to continue on a path toward the EU. Djelic, who is also science and technology minister in the Cvetkovic cabinet, said he is "convinced Serbia will become EU candidate by the end of 2008", and that the same deadline applies for the EU visa regime imposed on Serbian citizens to be lifted. However, he reminded that the speed at which the country will achieve this will depend on a report to be filed by Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz.
