The Ministry of the Interior (MUP) is today organizing ceremonies to mark the MUP and Police Day in Serbia. Interior Minister Dragan Jocic said, in a written statement read during the central ceremony at the MUP training center in Makis, that police have in the past year carried out their duties well in the fight against organized crime, securing safety of the society and citizens, and the country's legal order. Police Day marked with ceremonies "In the year behind us the hand of justice has reached many who placed themselves above the law, destroying social property, robbing the state and her citizens," Jocic said. He reminded that MUP members have in the past 12 months cut many narcotics smuggling routes, and solved numerous cases of robbery. The minister also commended their work in the people trafficking and illegal immigration sectors. 34 outstanding officers have also received awards today. The ceremony in Makis was attended by President Boris Tadic, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, BIA Director Rade Bulatovic, SPS President Ivica Dacic, the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) dignitaries and foreign diplomats. A number of MUP formations, including the Special Anti-terrorist Unit (SAJ) and Zandarmerija (Gendarmerie) demonstrated their equipment and skills today. The MUP and Police Day is marked each June 15, to honor the day in 1862 when Serbian Gendarmerie played a key role in clashes with the Turks near Belgrade's Cukur Cesma location, and in the subsequent two days of Turkish bombardment of the capital city.
