Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica Saturday urged further talks on Kosovo's future status. The proposal to continue negotiations on Kosovo's status should not be rejected, Kostunica told Tanjug, and voiced Serbia's readiness to start new negotiations "in any town in the province, and then in Belgrade." Kostunica proposes new rounds in Kosovo, Belgrade "Serbia wants to negotiate to find a political and democratic solution for the province," Kostunica said. "In Europe, the solutions for even much smaller problems than Kosovo are sought through negotiations, and it is unthinkable that someone does not want to negotiate, and instead opts for unilateral solutions." The Russian initiative, as a permanent Security Council member, to continue with talks is a proposal in the spirit of the basic UN mission to find a negotiated solution in keeping with the law and UN Charter, the prime minister explained. "It is of greatest importance for the Security Council to support Russia's proposal, and Serbia gives its full support to this constructive initiative, because it is the only way to avoid the unforeseeable and long-term crisis in the region," Kostunica said. Earlier, the government also strongly supported Moscow's official initiative launched at the UN Security Council with the aim of continuing negotiations. "Serbia is ready for the continuation of negotiations and prepared to take its share of responsibility for finding a solution which would be in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, UN Charter and Serbian Constitution," Tanjug after Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin presented the initiative in the United Nations Friday. Churkin said that Russia prepared and distributed the document for the UN Security Council session scheduled for December 19, calling for more talks on the future status of Kosovo. "The elements of proposal channel both the Contact Group and sides to the continuation of negotiations which, according to us, can be completed successfully," Churkin said, quoted by Itar-TASS news agency.
