EU member states defense ministers have adopted a position that an agreement on Kosovo is the only viable solution. Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Severiano Teixeira is presiding over the two-day meeting that started in Lisbon on Friday. EU defense chiefs favor Kosovo agreement He told reporters after yesterday's meeting that the ministers pointed out the European Union "wholeheartedly supports status negotiations mediated by the Contact Group Troika." The EU defense chiefs called for continuation of the diplomatic pressure on Belgrade and Pristina in order to reach a mutually acceptable solution, "which has no alternative." “In our opinion, only such a solution is just and viable,” Teixeira stressed. “However, what is now important and requires attention of the international community is to exert political and diplomatic pressure on both sides towards finding a solution." "The EU’s role in this is crucial,” stressed the Portuguese defense minister, adding that the bloc was ready to act and assume a vital role in the implementation of the status decision. “This will, of course, be developing in a close cooperation with other parties involved, particularly NATO and the United Nations,” he said. In the two-day meeting, defense ministers will address the issue of a Kosovo operation, in case the UN Security Council decides to hand over the supervision of the security in the province to the EU.
