Sreten Jocic "sues state for illegal detention"

Jocic was acquitted in April last year by the Special Court in Belgrade in a case where he stood accused of the murder of Croatian journalist Ivo Pukanic and his associate Niko Franjic in Zagreb in October 2008.

According to the newspaper, Jocic "filed the lawsuit because of illegal detention, violation of the presumption of innocence in the statements of state bodies and other reasons that were the consequence of his arrest."

The article said that "the complaint was filed on behalf of Jocic by the law firm Tomanovic" and was "first submitted to the Ministry of Justice for possible settlement."

If awarded, the compensation will be paid from the state budget, Politika said.

Jocic was detained from April 27, 2009 to December 28, 2012 - about 1,300 days. His detention was then abolished because the trial chamber conducting the proceedings against him and other defendants judged that there was no reason to extend it.

Jocic, however, was not set free on the occasion - as he was transferred to prison to serve 15 years in jail for another crime.
