Austrian police have arrested a gang that smuggled illegal immigrants from Kosovo to EU countries, it was announced in Vienna.

Austrian police have arrested a gang that smuggled illegal immigrants from Kosovo to EU countries, it was announced in Vienna. The police raid netted ten suspects – nine ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, and one Austrian woman. Austrian police bust people smugglers The group is charged with smuggling several hundred people from Kosovo and from Albania to Austria and then to other EU states, since May 2008. The gang charged between EUR 2,500 and 8,000 per person, the Austrian police said. The chief of the office set up to fight organized transfer of illegal immigrants through Austria said that the police operation was codenamed Owl, and that it "dealt the biggest blow to date to the international criminal transfer of illegals". According to the same source, three of those arrested are also chief suspects, while the route they used went via Serbia and Hungary to Austria.
