The Serbian dinar (RSD) today gained 0.07 percent against the euro, with the exchange rate of RSD 85.9340 for one euro. National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Radovan Jelasic last week said that the dinar exchange rate and that of other "freely floating" currencies will likely "continue to experience jitters for a while", with gains and losses. Jelasic pointed out that the NBS would lower its key policy rate should inflation numbers drop, and explained that in case this does transpire, the decision to cut the key interest rate will be up to the bank's Monetary Board. The central bank struggled in the past three months to stabilize the dinar, first by selling EUR 806mn to strengthen it, and then by buying EUR 13.4mn from the inter-banking market, fearing the home currency might gain in value too quickly. The dinar hit its yearly low against the euro on Dec. 4, when the exchange rate stood at RSD 91.6317, while it was the strongest on Aug. 7, when one euro was worth RSD 75.7543.
