The tunnel and the bypass were opened by the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport and Austrian Ambassador Johannes Eigner as part of a larger project aimed at revitalizing the Golubac Fortress.

The project, launched in 2012, is funded by the EU with 6.5 mln euros and carried out by the Austrian Development Agency in collaboration with the Serbian Office for European Integration and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications.

"Eastern Serbia can be brought back to life by investing in the Danube and the Golubac region," Vucic said at the ceremony.

Many people from this region live and work in Austria, said Vucic, who urged them to return to Serbia, adding that the country would try to get as much money from the EU as possible for work in the Danube riparian regions because, he said, the river belonged to most European nations.

Serbia will particularly work on road and water infrastructure on the Danube and the government will do everything to bring eastern Serbia closer to Belgrade, Vucic said, adding that a reconstruction of the Golubac Fortress would be continued thanks to EU funds.

The bypass road and the 150 m long tunnel form a road section spanning 760 m in length.
