Bulgaria to host RCC meeting on regional cooperation

One of the main topics of discussions will be regional cooperation as a factor of stability and economic development in South-Eastern Europe.

Participants have warned that structural reforms will be crucial for progress in the region.

The region has made average progress when it comes to growth, EU accession and boosting trade and employment - the key objectives of the strategy, RCC Secretary General Goran Svilanovic said ahead of the meetings.

The goals of the strategy have been exceeded in some areas, such as achieving a balance in trade, but remain only half-achieved when it comes to attracting foreign direct investments and improving workforce education, Svilanovic said.

There are also areas in which the results are more than dissatisfactory, he said.

Kjartan Bjornsson of the European Commission said that the EU will not accept the Western Balkans until the EU member states realise that the region also offers possibilities and has potential, and that is not merely a region of commitments for the EU.

Structural reforms are crucial on the path of progress, but they need to be implemented, rather than just established, said Bjornsson.
