KIEV Leonid Kravchuk has said that his country is "on the brink of civil war" and called on MPs to do all they can to find a way out of the crisis. "All the world acknowledges and Ukraine acknowledges that the state is on the verge of civil war," the former Ukrainian president told parliament in what AFP reported was "an emotional address." Ex-president warns Ukraine is "on brink of war" "There are parallel authorities in the country and there is a de-facto uprising. It is a revolution. It is a dramatic situation in which we must act with the greatest responsibility," he told deputies who gave him a standing ovation, the French news agency said. "We need to ease the confrontation between the sides and agree a plan to solve the conflict. We need to work on this plan step by step to ease the confrontation," Kravchuk said. Two other former presidents, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko were also present in parliament, which yesterday, on the first day of the extraordinary session, voted to abolish a law that limited right to demonstrations, adopted on January 16. The deputies will also deal with another sensitive issue - amnesty for demonstrators arrested as they clashed with the police. The authorities offered amnesty for all accused of non-serious crimes on condition that "activists leave all the Kiev buildings and streets they are currently occupying," AFP said. But the opposition wants the amnesty "not to be conditional." A continuation of a dialogue between the government and the opposition was also confirmed by Deputy PM Sergei Arbuzov, who said the government was "ready to secure conditions necessary for a national stabilization." Arbuzov has been appointed acting prime minister after Mykola Azarov stepped down on Tuesday. (Beta/AP, file) Beta AFP
