ZRENJANIN Serbia’s PM Ivica Dacic says that the Acquittal of two Croat generals will have serious consequences in the reconciliation process in the region. He says that the not guilty verdict in the case against Croat Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac confirms double standards of the international community when it comes to crimes in the former Yugoslavia. “Acquittal of Croat generals will affect reconciliation” “This will seriously affect the reconciliation process in the region. How can somebody ask us to condemn all crimes and others are allowed not to condemn crimes against the Serbian people? Also, this will certainly affect our relation with the Hague Tribunal. We will reduce the cooperation down to a technical level,” the prime minister stressed. Gotovina and Markac were on Friday acquitted of almost all charges for crimes against Serb civilians during and after the Operation Storm in the summer of 1995 and they were immediately released. The decision has surprised the Serbian public but also former Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. Dacic believes that Serbia should stand by the things it is right about till the end and not waste its potential in “quarrels about footnotes and asterisks”. “The verdict is not in accordance with the international community’s determination to have an objective approach to all war crimes and that everybody must accept through the reconciliation process that crimes were committed and that somebody needs to be held responsible for them,” he told reporters on Saturday in the northern Serbian town of Zrenjanin. According to him, the Hague Tribunal can make any decision it wants but it will always be known that two completely different verdicts were made by two trial chambers. “It is obvious that the verdict is political. It was aimed at acquitting Croatia of crimes committed against Serbs. The reality is completely different, more than 200,000 Serbs were expelled from Croatia, several thousands were killed,” Dacic underscored. “Is it possible in modern Europe for someone to expel 200,000 and kill several thousands of civilians and not be held responsible? It seemed to me that it was not possible but now I see that it is,” the prime minister added. Ivica Dacic (Tanjug, file) Beta Tanjug
