BELGRADE The economic recovery constitutes a national priority as Serbia is in a very difficult situation. This is a conclusion reached at the first meeting of the National Council for Economic Recovery, which was chaired by Prime Minister Ivica Dacic. Govt. council: Economic recovery is national priority Emergency measures that the Serbian government has prepared to relieve the burden of the economy and cut public spending are the first step in building foundations for the consolidation of the Serbian economy, the government's Media Office has announced. At the meeting held on Thursday evening, the National Council for Economic Recovery agreed that the body should do an analysis of the state of economy, develop short-term, anti-crisis program, as well as a plan for Serbia's economic recovery. In a statement for Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), the prime minister announced for the next week the budget review and accompanying draft laws aimed at reducing expenditures, and underlined that the Serbian government would propose measures that would save up around EUR 1bn. “The state will propose the budget review on Monday, accompanying bills by the end of the next week which will be aimed at introducing spending cuts and saving when it comes to the state,” Dacic noted. “We must think about short-term and long-term measures, and achieve the consolidation of public finances,” the PM said, cautioning that the budget deficit exceeded the value that had been forecast at the beginning of the year. “The deficit stands at seven percent, and it should have been 4.5 percent, while the public debt, if this trend continues, will approach 60 percent by the end of the year,” he pointed out.
