The situation in the Serbian media is the worst since 2000, the results of the Media Sustainability Index (MSI) presented in Belgrade on Monday showed. The MSI is measured by IREX Promedia non-governmental organization in 80 countries around the world. Serbian media "in worst situation since 2000" The MSI for 2011, based on five parameters assessed by connoisseurs of the media scene in Serbia, shows that the media sustainability is at the same level as in 2001. Goran Cetinic, organizer of the MSI session specified that, as in previous years, freedom of speech, plurality of media available to citizens, professional journalism standards, business sustainability of media, and the efficacy of institutions that support independent media were scored with 1 to 4. In the first measuring 11 years ago, Serbia had an average score of 1,86, and today is almost at the same level with an average of 1,9. Only Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are lower ranked in the region. Long-term trends indicate that democratic changes have not improved the media sector, and the reason for this is too high politicization of the media sector, too strong political influence on editorial policy, too weak resistance of journalists, and avoiding regulation of the media, Cetinic said. According to him, politicization of the media has become the Serbian paradigm and cannot be attributed to any individual party. When it comes to the situation in 2011, all regional countries have achieved progress in the freedom of speech, and Serbia was scored with 2. Professionalism journalism in Serbia was scored with 1.72, and plurality of news sources with 2.93 (ranking Serbia the highest in the region). Business conditions for the media and the quality of the media institutions have been stagnating for 11 years, having been scored with 1.71 and 2.17 respectively.
