Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz has presented his new report on Serbia's cooperation to the United Nations Security Council in New York. "Serbia holds the key to arresting Mladic and Hadzic. They must be taken to justice if all relevant institutions do their job properly," he said. Hague prosecutor: Serbia holds key Brammertz commended Serbia's cooperation with that institution, but noted that the failure to take the two remaining fugitives to justice was a cause for concern. "Cooperation with Serbia is proceeding well. Serbia is meeting ICTY requests for access to documents, archives and witnesses, he said presenting his latest regular report to the UNSC. However, the failure to take the two remaining fugitives Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic to justice is a cause for serious concern," Brammertz said at the UN today. "Serbia must bridge the gap between its stated readiness to locate an arrest the fugitives and efficiency, as time is passing but no results are visible," he said. Brammertz noted that since his previous regular report, he noticed improvements and that the competent investigation organs in Serbia have started implementing Hague recommendations. "Much remains to be done, however, and progress must be faster," he said. "On the whole, Serbia must adopt a more active approach to arresting the fugitives, based on an all-round strategy covering all involved persons and exerting positive pressure in order to make the arrests," stated the Hague chief prosecutor. He also urged a more rigorous stand toward individuals involved in the network of assistance to the fugitives. "Serbian authorities must make it clear that associates of the fugitives will be punished," Brammertz concluded. Serge Brammertz (Beta, file)
