Bulgaria's controversial candidate for the post of European commissioner, Rumiana Jeleva, has resigned. Austrian People’s Party MP in the European Parliament Othmar Karas has confirmed that Jeleva withdrew her nomination for EU commissioner for humanitarian aid due to “personal reasons”. Rumiana Jeleva's move followed tough questioning from Euro MPs about her financial interests, the BBC reported. According to Head of Social Democratic Party of Austria Jorg Leichtfried, Jeleva was the weakest candidate for the EC. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov refused to accept her resignation as Bulgarian foreign minister but accepted her withdrawal of candidacy for European commissioner. “I do not accept her resignation as foreign minister because I do not have any reason to,” Bulgarian PM said. The European Parliament rejected only one candidate in the past, Italian Rocco Buttiglione in 2004, who was replaced by another candidate. Bulgaria will now have to nominate a new candidate. The voting, which was originally scheduled for January 26, has been postponed and the election of the new EC is most likely to take place on February 11.
