Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos says he strongly supports Serbia's decision to submit its EU candidate status bid. Spain has taken over the rotating EU presidency on Jan. 1; on Dec. 23, Serbian President Boris Tadic formally submitted the application. "We spoke with President Tadic and Foreign Minister [Vuk] Jeremic. Serbia decided for itself what the right moment was to submit the application for a full-fledged EU membership," the Spanish minister was quoted. Moratinos added that should the Serb people wish to join the union, "it is up to us to take it and consider it seriously". Spain has announced that one of its priorities during the six-month EU presidency will be the Western Balkans. Moratinos also said that his country hoped to be in a position to accept applications from other regional countries, so that they too have a European perspective, in order to have security strengthened in that part of Europe.
