Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed on Wednesday that police launched a large-scale raid to arrest organized crime suspects. Dacic also said that Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic was among those detained. Minister confirms Zrenjanin mayor arrest The operation itself, he explained, began back in May, before the current government was set up, and before he was appointed interior minister. Dacic told journalists that the public would be given the names of the people against whom criminal charges were. He added that the operation would continued and that "it will make no difference who comes from which party if it is to be proved that there are elements of a criminal act". B92 learned earlier today that beside Knezevic, who was elected to office in the May local ballot on the Democratic Party (DS) ticket, Serbian police (MUP) also placed the municipal urban planning chief Nikola Halas and owner of the Novi Sad-based company Gvozden Grgur Ugljesa in their custody. They and ten others are suspects in the so-called Construction Mafia case. The group is suspected of illegally fixing construction tenders and engaging in other criminal activities related to this sector. The case is in the jurisdiction of the Special Organized Crime Prosecution.
