Hemofarm has accepted Hillary Clinton’s appeal to stop sponsoring the Serbian Basketball Association over Miladin Kovacevic. Daily Politika quotes a statement from Hemofarm Chairman Miodrag Babic, who states that the company “cannot defend aggressiveness or justify the consequences of Kovacevic’s actions.” Hemofarm answers Clinton appeal Although he states that Clinton’s appeal is absurd, Babic adds that he understands why the senator “has got involved in this unpleasant situation that was brought about by unfortunate circumstances that the judicial authorities are looking into.” Clinton sent an appeal to the U.S. company AND1's distributor for Eastern Europe, together with Hemofarm, Turkish Efes and Italian Kappa, to suspend their sponsorship of the Serbian Basketball Association (KSS) as long as Kovacevic continues to play for the KK Vrbas team. An official at AND1 stated that he could not understand what connection the company, which manufactures basketball equipment, had with the Kovacevic case. “I spoke with our office in the U.S. and told them that we would continue to do our job as before, which means that we’ll continue to work with KK Vrbas,” Politika was informed. Daily Blic quotes a statement from KSS President Dragan Kapicic who called Clinton’s demands “very mistaken”. “This case should be resolved by the two states. I think it’s very stupid that the U.S. state is directly attacking an organization and the firms that are sponsoring it,” said Kapicic. The KSS cannot react as Serbia has yet to launch proceedings regarding the case, said the KSS president, adding that the companies the senator had called on should wait for Serbia’s reaction. In May, Kovacevic was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a fellow student at Binghamton University in New York state, before fleeing the country a month later on illegally issued travel documents. On his return to Serbia, the student signed for KK Vrbas, inciting an angry reaction in the U.S.
