He said that London will support new negotiations on Kosovo if so decided by the UN, although he believes that the chances of the two sides reaching an accord are extremely slim.

"There's not much of a chance of either side changing their initial positions, in which case I doubt that we will see a compromise. But if New York [base of the UN] decides that there should be a further period of talks to see whether the two sides can agree, then that's fine."

Commenting on the possibility of Kosovo declaring independence unilaterally, Wordsworth said he hopes that will not happen.

"As far as unilateral declarations of independence are concerned, we are very clear that we want to see a stable and agreeable solution. We hope we can still find agreement with our partners and with the parties concerned. We would hope not to see any premature, unilateral moves."

He also remarked that splitting Kosovo would not be a good idea, although that could change if Belgrade and Priština were to reach an accord on the issue.

Commenting on the differences between the West and Russia on the status of Kosovo, Wordsworth said that the International Contact Group showed itself to be an efficient mechanism early on in the status process.

"It's an arrangement that has had strains in the past, but we are trying to accommodate Russian concerns and we hope we can find an agreement with Russia," he added.
