Russia will not succeed in destabilizing the Balkans, former NATO Secretary General Andres Fogh Rasmussen has told Radio Free Europe (RFE).

Instead, he said, "it is an attempt by Russia to send a clear signal to NATO that it has strategic interests in the region, especially after the decision of the alliance to accept Montenegro."

"From the overall perspective, taking into account the number of participants in the exercise, it is very limited, and in addition, as far as I know, Serbia has expelled several Russians shortly before organizing this exercise. At the end of the day, Serbia knows very well that its future lies within the Euro-Atlantic institutions, primarily the European Union, but I think in the long run also in NATO membership," Rasmussen said.

Asked whether he thought that Russia would try to "destabilize the Western Balkans, particularly now when Montenegro is joining the alliance," the former NATO chief said, "off course it will try," and added:

"But I don't think it will succeed, especially since the responsible forces in Serbia know very well that Serbia must first of all ensure its membership in NATO, which will happen in the long term perspective."
