There have been many studies made in the last 12 months or so that conclude that should Russia decide to take on NATO it can and win. The Rand Corporation has concluded that if Russia wished to take over the Baltics it could do so in 24 hours and in the process destroy any NATO opposition.
These 4000 troops that NATO will station in countries that border Russia is a joke. Try 400,000 and you might be a little closer to the mark. What is funnier is that the US has stationed 300 marines in Norway - yes 300. I imagine that Moscow is shaking in its boots.
