Syria conflict: Russia neutral, U.S. pledges additional aid

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has condemned partiality of certain countries in the Syrian conflict and stressed that Moscow is neutral.

MOSCOW, PERTH Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has condemned partiality of certain countries in the Syrian conflict and stressed that Moscow is neutral. “Our stance on Syria is well known: Russia does not support anyone in this conflict, neither President Assad (contrary to popular belief) nor the rebels,” he told Finnish daily Helsing Sanomat. We believe that this is not right, that this will never bring peace to Syria,” Medvedev stressed. Moscow advocates negotiations between the Syrian regime and the opposition, without any international intervention. Russia and China have so far three times blocked resolutions threatening the Syrian authorities with sanctions at the UN Security Council. In the meantime, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the U.S. would send additional humanitarian aid worth USD 30mn to the Syrian opposition. The total amount of the U.S. aid to the opposition will therefore reach USD 200mn. Clinton announced this at an annual U.S.-Australia meeting in Perth. France on Tuesday became the first Western state to recognize the newly formed Syrian opposition coalition as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
