Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica said late Thursday that there was no reason to celebrate the obtaining of the EU candidate status. He added that it is in the interest of citizens that Serbia proclaims political neutrality and puts an end to the EU integration. No reason to celebrate, DSS leader claims "Who is celebrating the obtaining of the candidate status in Serbia? Should people without jobs and impoverished people celebrate it? Who except the authorities can celebrate the status, when we all know the price we paid for the candidacy?" Kostunica asked. In a written statement for Tanjug, the DSS leader said that the status was an empty word of no benefit to Serbia and its citizens, and added that the economy suffers damage because of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) signed with the EU. “The citizens should make an important decision at the next elections, which influences Serbia's future, and that decision is whether Serbia should still pursue the policy that the EU has no alternative and follow the path of self-destruction, or whether the time has come for Serbia to declare political neutrality,” he explained.
