Opposition SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic has rejected accusations coming from the camp of the ruling Democrats (DS) that he is bringing down the legal order. The Serb Progressive (SNS) party head says he will be at the helm of a protest rally scheduled for April 16 in Belgrade, even if that meant he would be arrested. Opposition SNS party leader "ready to risk arrest" His party also assessed on Monday that the Democrats were succumbing to panic, "due to the popular dissatisfaction". Nikolic says his desire is to bring down the current government, rather than the country's legal order, and said the statements coming from DS were endangering the constitutional order. SNS, said its leader, "would never do something that went against the interests of the country". Nikolic added he interpreted the accusations made by the Democrats as an announcement the authorities will take a "rough" approach toward the Progressives, but says he was "not scared". "I will be at the head of the column that will walk in the streets of Belgrade," said he, and asserted that he was "used to getting arrested by those in power". The rally to be held next weekend was scheduled in order to put pressure on the authorities to call early elections. Despite the war of words raging between the two sides, Nikolic noted he was optimistic that he would receive an answer to the demands by April 16, and that he would also meet with the DS leader and the country's president, Boris Tadic. "It is Tadic's obligation to talk to the opposition, if for no other reason than to say he does not agree to have elections called for December 18," stated Nikolic. Meanwhile, one of the DS deputy presidents, Jelena Trivan, told B92 that "elections in any country are determined by the Constitution and laws", and described the SNS demand as a "threat". The Democrats are open to discuss all issues, said she, but added that she was "unaware of any country where elections were called through making deals and via the media". Trivan also said that Nikolic's stated resolve to lead the rally even if that meant he would be arrested was "pathetic demagoguery". Tomislav Nikolic (Tanjug, file)
