President Boris Tadic is in the U.S., heading the Serbian delegation until September 26 at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly. Tadic began his trip in Cleveland today by meeting with representatives of the Serb Diaspora in the U.S. and the Ohio National Guard. Tadic meets with Diaspora reps in Cleveland He also met with Senator George Voinovich and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Serbia continued to pursue policies of peace, compromise and EU integration, but would not renounce its sovereignty, territorial integrity or identity, Tadic said after the talks. At the Serbian Diaspora reception, attended by Voinovich and Ohio Guard Commander Gregory White, Tadic said that Serbia would not pursue policies that exposed people to danger. He said that Serbia would pursue rational and dignified policies in championing its national and state interests, and would safeguard its citizens and identity. “I always say that we want Serbia to be a member of the EU, but with our identity and culture. All those who believe that such political goals carry a loss of identity should know that Serbia will never renounce its policy of defending its identity,” Tadic said. He called on the Diaspora in Ohio to covey that message to all Serbs living in the U.S., adding that he saw “no alternative to these policies.” The president reiterated that although Serbia would never renounce its sovereignty and territorial integrity, it would never allow the issue to put people’s lives in danger. “We are pursuing peaceful policies and defending Kosovo through diplomatic and political avenues,” he said. He said that Serbia wanted to pursue peaceful policies in the region and to forge the best possible relations with its neighbors. “Today, Serbia is a democratic country that wants to become a member of the EU,” Tadic said. After the challenges and problems of the 1990s, Tadic said, Serbia had created new policies in the very difficult circumstances that it was facing. Tadic said that Serbia had made significant economic progress over the last few years, even though it was now facing the fallout from the global economic crisis. “Today we have major investors coming from the U.S. That is something I respect greatly,” Tadic said, adding that he expected American companies to continue coming to Serbia. “Without direct investments from the U.S., we cannot build a stable society, and that is why we are counting on investors from the U.S.,” he said. On September 23, the president will attend a reception in New York to mark the General Assembly (GA), to be hosted by U.S. President Barrack Obama. Tadic will address the GA on Friday, September 25, at 21:00 CET. He will also be holding a number of meetings in the sidelines of the GA session. Boris Tadic (FoNet)
