The UK’s Minister for Europe Jim Murphy says that his country will support Kosovo independence. “Britain supports Kosovo independence, but that independence should not take us by surprise …The international community wants to fulfill its promise to Kosovo, and that means that the Kosovo government will cooperate with the international community in order for every element of the process to be precisely defined. It is important that as many countries as possible recognize Kosovo independence,” Murphy said. UK supports Kosovo independence The minister told Albanian-language BBC that “Britain will recognize Kosovo when the time comes.” “Great Britain and the majority of European countries have clearly stated that they will not allow a thoughtless veto from one country to stop the international community from fulfilling its promise that Kosovo will become an independent and sovereign state,” Murphy stressed. He added that the future EU mission to Kosovo would be a key component of the political support for Kosovo independence and the implementation of the parts of the Ahtisaari plan relating to the protection of Kosovo’s minority communities. Murphy said that there was a high level of agreement regarding the mission throughout Europe and “a great determination to support an independent, democratically organized Kosovo.” “The existing Resolution 1244, in the British government’s opinion, gives a clear legal basis for a future EU mission to Kosovo. Most EU countries think so too,” Murphy said. He also rejected Serbia’s claims that Kosovo independence would bring instability to the region. “There will be problems if Kosovo does not receive independence – maintaining the status quo would certainly not lead to stability. Of course Serbia is concerned, and we are constantly talking to its officials,” Murphy said, adding that it was understood that the Serbian minority in Kosovo had be protected and have the same rights as they would in any other democratic nation.
