The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) says a new international mission in Kosovo is unacceptable to Serbia. A mission to replace UNMIK, either civilian or military, can only be deployed after the province's status is resolved, a spokesman for Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's party said Monday in Belgrade. DSS rejects EU mission prior to Kosovo settlement Andreja Mladenovic told reporters that a new mission must first be approved by the UN Security Council, adding that the current international mission has also undergone this procedure. He excluded the possibility that the European Union mission could replace the existing UN Security Council operation in Kosovo, "before the status talks are completed and a compromise solution, in the form of essential autonomy, is reached." Mladenovic noted that the deployment of such a mission before the end of the process "would represent a precedent that would pose a serious problem." He recalled attempts to replace Resolution 1244 with a new one, pointing out that the Serb side managed, with the aid of Russia, to prevent this in the Security Council. Mladenovic explained that the DSS believes the rejection of the Ahtisaari plan for Kosovo "removed the possibility of any new mission coming to the province without previous approval of the Security Council."
