Ex-army reservists will tomorrow protest at the Merdare checkpoint, on the administrative line with Kosovo. This was announced today by their representatives from 22 southern Serbian towns. Army vets to stage demo at Kosovo crossing The veterans, who fought in the ranks of the Yugoslav Army (VJ) during the 1999 war in the province, said they will gather in Beloljin, near Kursumlija, to then proceed toward Merdare. Their goal, Chairman of the United Striking Committee of the 3rd Army District Gorjan Jakoviljevic said, will be "to pull down a sign reading, 'Kosovo Republic'". "It all started in Kosovo, and that's where it will all end. We will try to cross the administrative line, and to light candles for our fellow fighters who lost their lives defending Kosovo," Jakoviljevic was quoted as saying by Beta news agency. The veterans, engaged in months of protests over unpaid war wages, also said they will on August 14 stage a demonstration in front of the government headquarters in Belgrade. Although former reservists from several southern towns have already received their overdue wages, Jakovljevic said the protest in Belgrade will continue until the government meets all their demands.
