Spanish press: Kosovo independence laden with danger
13 September 2007 | 14:04 | Source: Tanjug
MADRID -- Madrid-based daily ABC warns against Kosovo's independence in an editorial published Thursday.

An outcome that would grant the province independence would not only violate international law that calls for national integrity of countries to be respected, but would also create a dangerous precedent that other separatist regions would follow, the newspaper believes.

"This would, from the highest place in the international community, add wind to the sails of separatists who wish to cancel the principle of territorial integrity," the daily writes in a lengthy analysis of the current Kosovo status process.

At the same time, the article points out that an independent Kosovo would become a society "without nuances, made up exclusively of those of the same color, who speak the same language and belong to the same ethnicity and religion."

"Besides, independence would inevitably create renewed regional instability, with potential to seriously 'infect' all neighbors," ABC says.

The article concludes that Kosovo's independence would represent "a giant step backwards for all mankind's efforts to build diversified communities made up of free citizens, capable of living in peace despite the differences."
