Tadić calls for compromise

Tadić said that he has never run from meetings with Albanian politicians and that he is prepared to meet with them.

“Serbia is protecting its legitimate interests in Kosovo. There is no state in the world that will give up on its sovereignty and territorial integrity because then it moves into a process of separation.” Tadić said, adding that he supports direct discussions.

“Only through direct discussions, when we stop waving our nationalistic flags, can we change positions which are very strong and which do not look like they are leading to a compromise.”

Tadić said that he supports a long-term, sustainable and realistic solution for Kosovo and that, in his opinion, the Albanian and Serbian sides can find a compromise.

“Regardless of our starting stances, a compromise is possible and we do not wish to control the lives of Albanians in Kosovo.” Tadić said.

He said that an independent Kosovo would create a legal-political precedent, which could destabilise many countries in the region and beyond.

“If Kosovo gains independence, who would be able to stop other ethnic communities living in other countries where they are the regional majority from demanding the same rights?” Tadić asked.
