Ratko Mladić's chief attorney appointed at Hague
The Secretariat of the Hague Tribunal appointed Branko Lukić as Ratko Mladić's chief attorney before the Hague, the Tribunal released on Friday.

The Secretariat of the Hague Tribunal appointed Branko Lukic as Ratko Mladic's chief attorney before the Hague, the Tribunal released on Friday. By the decision of Senior Legal Officer Ken Roberts, Lukic was appointed as Mladic's attorney for the period of 120 days so that he would not be deprived of the right to legal representation until the Secretariat checks whether the defendant has the resources to pay for the lawyer's services himself. Lukic is also defending former general Sreten Lukic before the Hague, which is why the court called on him to deliver an explanation as to the ways in which he would harmonize the two indictees' defense. Since Sreten Lukic and Ratko Mladic gave their consent for Branko Lukic to be their defense attorney, the Secretariat concluded that Lukic's appointment as Mladic's lawyer would not represent conflict of interests or in any way be detrimental to the defense of either of the two defendants. Mladic signed the note of consent for Lukic to be appointed as his representative on Wednesday, since the Secretariat refused his request for Milos Saljic to be hired as his chief defense attorney. The Secretariat stated in a release that Saljic does not speak either of the two official languages used in the Hague, which is why he does not meet the requirements to be appointed as representative before the Tribunal. Lukic previously represented Miroslav Kvocka, Dragan Jokic and Milomir Stakic before the Hague. Mladic was arrested in Serbia on My 26 and extradited to the Hague on May 31. He refused to plead to the indictment during his first appearance before the Hague on June 3 and was removed from the courtroom because he would not hear the points of the indictment.
