BELGRADE Milovan Drecun says "there is no alternative" and that agreement must be reached between the government and Serbs in Kosovo on the Brussels deal. The chair of the Parliament Committee on Kosovo and Metohija and SNS party MP pointed out that "only the Serbian government has the capacity to protect the interests of Serbs from Kosovo." "No alternative to implementing agreement" "Someone purposely will not take this as our chance and is creating room for their own political action, seeking the bad in everything," Drecun was quoted as telling the Belgrade-based Pink TV outlet. Asked whether it was expected that the government and the Serbs from Serbswould arrive at some arrangement by May 12, when the visit of First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic was expected, Drecun stressed that there was "no alternative" and that an agreement must happen "because only Serbian government has the capacity to protect their interests." "No one has the capacity to protect the interests of Serbs in Kosovo like the government. No individuals and parties, even foreign statesmen. The starting and final assessment is that nobody can not protect their interests like the government," he said. Drecun added that the representatives of Serbs from Kosovo who oppose the implementation of the agreement on the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina will not suffer any penalties. "The government in Belgrade protects the interests of a part of its people, and thus the vital interests of the state. Otherwise, Pristina will rejoice," he added. Drecun reiterated that the community of Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo will be "in all ways" associated with Belgrade. He said this will happen through "funding and registers" while "jobs will not be abolished". "As far as we're concerned children will have one birth certificate, but if they want to, for the sake of free of movement or something else, to take also the Kosovo one they will be registered there as well. It's a formal thing," he said. (Tanjug, file) Beta Pink TV
