At this point some 11,000 citizens in 6,500 households are cut off from the world in several parts of Serbia after heavy snowfall of last week. Six people froze to death, while another person is listed as missing, the authorities said. 11,000 people snowbound in Serbia MUP Emergency Sector chief Predrag Maric said the police were sending in more equipment to clear snow in the endangered areas, where more snow is forecast to fall in the coming days. On Wednesday, a homeless man was found dead in Lebane, southern Serbia. The missing person is a native of Medvedja, also in the south. In the west of the country, in the region of Mt. Sjenica - where temperatures have been dropping to nearly minus 30 degrees at night -local authorities are appealing for assistance from neighboring municipalities and the government. The head of the local emergency situations HQ, Selim Hukic, explained that Sjenica needed money, fuel and machinery. There, rescuers are working each day to reach remote locations, sometimes making their way through the snow for several hours. Hukic said it is believed that some 4,000 citizens are still "completely snowbound" in that region, while his men managed to clear all major roads, and are now working to make smaller roads passable.
