A population and household census was suspended in Macedonia after MPs adopted a bill revoking the 2011 Law on Census.

A population and household census was suspended in Macedonia after MPs adopted a bill revoking the 2011 Law on Census. The Macedonian parliament adopted the bill late on Saturday. Macedonia suspends population census The adoption of the bill followed after a three-day debate during which the government and the opposition had been accusing each other of falsifying the current and the last census. Justice Minister Blerim Bexheti said that reasons for adoption of the bill were inconsistencies in the implementation of the Law on Census and insufficient time to prepare and train the census collectors. Opposition MPs left the session early and did not vote. 62 MPs voted in favor of the bill. The census in Macedonia started on October 1 and it was supposed to end on October 15.

Macedonia suspends population census

The adoption of the bill followed after a three-day debate during which the government and the opposition had been accusing each other of falsifying the current and the last census.

Justice Minister Blerim Bexheti said that reasons for adoption of the bill were inconsistencies in the implementation of the Law on Census and insufficient time to prepare and train the census collectors.

Opposition MPs left the session early and did not vote. 62 MPs voted in favor of the bill.

The census in Macedonia started on October 1 and it was supposed to end on October 15.
