Washington "absolutely rejects the idea of a division of Kosovo as it is dangerous for Kosovo and the entire Balkans", a U.S. State Department official said. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon was in Pristina on Thursday. "United States rejects division of Kosovo" Gordon once again expressed Washington's full backing for "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo", Beta news agency reported. "That is a clear position. The U.S. was clear concerning a division of Kosovo. We do not support that idea. We are against a division. We do not think that it would be in anyone's interest," Gordon stressed. He warned that a division of Kosovo would jeopardize the region's stability. "A division would have regional consequences. We think that it would be negative for the entire region. The Balkans that would be based on drawing borders around every ethnic group would be a recipe for misery. And that is not something that we support," Gordon explained. In Pristina, the U.S. official met with President Atifete Jahjaga and Premier Hashim Thaci. Speaking about the EULEX investigation into the reports on organ trafficking in Kosovo - which name members of the former ethnic Albanian KLA, who had Thaci as one of their leaders, as perpetrators - Gordon said the EU mission was capable of carrying out such an investigation. Thaci said Kosovo had full confidence in the international judiciary. Serbia, on the other hand, wants an independent probe into the atrocities to be carried out under the United Nations umbrella.
