Metropolitan Amfilohije says that Montenegro’s integration into the EU only has any sense “if Europe returns to God.” Speaking in the St. Savior church near Herceg Novi, Amfilohije said that Europe was not built on Christian values, and that entry into that sort of Europe would mean renouncing one’s own identity, reports the ecclesiastical pamphlet Svetigorapres. Amfilohije: Europe is ungodly “Integrating into Europe, which is ever more a Europe without God, a Europe against God, whose constitution omits to mention that it is based on Christian values--that means losing one’s compass, one’s spiritual peace, one’s sense; it means renouncing everything that we are built on and that we have through our history,” said the bishop. Amfilohije, who has been standing in for Patriarch Pavle as the Serbian Orthodox Church’s spiritual leader for over year during the latter's period of convalescence at Belgrade's Military Medical Academy, said that there can be no future in the world without belief in God. “If entering Europe means losing a sense for the living presence of God in everyday life, in our human affairs, then we have no need for ourselves, then we have no need even for Europe. Then we’ll look like blind people falling into the same ditch,” he said. Metropolitan Amfilohije (FoNet, archive)
