France is whole-heartedly on Serbia’s side when it comes to EU accession, despite conflicting views on Kosovo, says an adviser to the French Foreign Ministry. Speaking to Vecernje Novosti, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner’s adviser and Foreign Ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier said that in France, Serbia had found a close ally on its path to EU integration. “France is on Serbia’s side” “We maintain constant contact with Serbia. France can help, but much of that depends on Serbia. Serbia must do its part in arresting (Ratko) Mladic, and France must employ diplomatic efforts to convince its European partners of the importance of Serbia’s continued path toward the EU,” said Chevallier. France had, he said, supported the EU mission to Belgrade, as there was no reason not to support Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic’s proposal. “We agreed with this demarche that would be added to the prosecutor’s work, but not as some kind of substitute for his work, as we have full faith in the conclusions of Prosecutor (Serge) Brammertz,” said Chevallier, adding that forming and sending such a mission required the consensus of all 27 EU member-states. “Arresting Mladic is the best way to achieve full cooperation. We have no reason to doubt Serbia’s intent in that respect,” he concluded.
