Goran Svilanovic says Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica will "decide who will be the president of Serbia." "I think that he [Kostunica] will support Democratic Party candidate Boris Tadic in the second round and that support will be of a key significance," Svilanovic told B92 as the results of the first round of voting in the presidential elections came in last night. Analysts: Kostunica's endorsement crucial Incumbent Tadic and the deputy leader of the Radicals, Tomislav Nikolic, are headed for a run-off on Feb. 3. Veteran human rights activist Sonja Liht told B92 she believes that Kostunica will now have to "very clearly" express his support for one of the candidates. "I am convinced that he knows he will have to speak out about his political attitude. I expect that, despite some problems Kostunica is facing now, above all whether to decide in favor of full or some kind of partial European integration, he will still have to decide in favor of what Boris Tadic symbolizes," Liht said, adding that this would also be logical in light of Kostunica's policy "for years now." Beta news agency reported that political analysts in the evening of Jan. 20 in the Media Center assessed that the large voter turnout, of over 61 percent, is an indication that the citizens recognized the importance of the elections for the future of Serbia. Former president of the Constitutional Court of Serbia Slobodan Vucetic told journalists that the citizens had shown interest in the fate of the country and had shown the determination to participate in the solving of the problem. Analyst Vladimir Goati said that analysts had "underestimated the ability of voters to realize that these were critical elections and that Serbia is at a crossroads." The voters felt this and turned out at the elections in large numbers, Goati said. "Such a large turnout surprised all of us," said political analyst Djordje Vukadinovic immediately after the closing of the polls in a special broadcast on state television.
