UN set to debate Kosovo Monday

Ban Ki-moon stressed that UN Special Kosovo Envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s plan, envisaging supervised independence for Kosovo, “contained the right elements for a sustainable solution to Kosovo's future status.”

At the same Council session, UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker will present his report on the implementation of standards in Kosovo for the past four months.

Ruecker said last week in Priština that he would insist in his report on a "quick settlement of the province’s future status."

The Western states wish to see the Kosovo status issue settled as soon as possible through adoption of a new UN resolution.

They have to date come up with four drafts that all suggested a form of supervised independence for the province.

Russia remains opposed to Kosovo’s independence and automatic recognition of its statehood after 120 day of a renewed Belgrade-Priština dialogue, as it has been recommended in the last two drafts.

The European Union, whose administrative mission is set to take over UNMIK’s authorities in Kosovo, cannot move to the province without a UN resolution in place.
