"So, with all due respect to some commentators, but if you really think that Kosova can be forced to remain in Serbia in spite of 2 millions people's strong will to separate, then, you are still living in Milosevic's communist era of thinking in spite of the fact that you hold some elections."

With all due respect to you. But there are 7 milion Serbs in that same country with a strong will to keep Kosovo within their borders. Through all your hypocrisy you still managed to admit that Serbs have the legal and with that every right to keep Kosovo. Russia will back that and secure it with Georgia.

So two options, Ruecker said it just to speed up the process, even though no real threat exists. Or, Ruecker is just sending threats to UNSC to get the result he wants. Which one is it?

How can Serbs and Serbian government talk of International law when they have broken every law on the book by murdering thousands of their own citizens. I don't know if it's ignorance or hypocrisy coming out of some commentators. But Serbia is the last and the least eligible to act as a defender of the international law. The only mistake US made when Former Yugoslavia signed the capitulation treaty was to leave that thin written line about the integrity of Yugoslavia.

Remember, TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY of YUGOSLAVIA. Which included Monte Negro too. So, nowhere in that document says SERBIA.

At Present time that document has become Serbia's only thread of blackmail and the only thin thread to hold on too. It'll eventually break since it carries no legal weight under the current circumstances.

I assume Albanians would have maybe accepted the highest level of autonomy if some of the former Republics still remained in the union, but according to Serb and Albanian uncompromising comments I see on this site, I see no reconciliation for the next hundred years.

To make things worse, Serb allegiant comments and it's disastrous record of how it treats it's minorities will undoubtly work on the favor of Albanians in the end. Of course, if they can sit patiently and kill time for the next 3 to 4 months.

I assume after everything has happened for Albanians to choose to live with Serbia is like a ship choosing to pass a night with a Wolfe. And probably vice versa for some Kosova Serbs.

So, with all due respect to some commentators, but if you really think that Kosova can be forced to remain in Serbia in spite of 2 millions people's strong will to separate, then, you are still living in Milosevic's communist era of thinking in spite of the fact that you hold some elections.

No, International law based on democratic principles says that first you can massivly brutalize an ethnic group and still force them to live under your tyrany because you happened to have built in their land some churches 700 years ago.

Here where I live in Costa Rica, there are numerous churches built by Spanish conquerors. Does that mean that Spain can freely come to our land deport millions, kill thousands, and in the end ask that the international law be respected because once in the past they were forceful owners of these lands for over 3 centuries ago.

Sorry gentleman, but I see no fair wisdom nor civility in the comments of Serbs and few Albanians as well.

With the Chinese supporting the Serbian position no overly ambitious resolution will pass.Bush was not able to even get his Republican Senators to pass an immigration bill in the US Senate so how in the world do you think he is going to tell the Chinese and the Russians what to do regarding an issue as insignificant as Kosovo is to the overall security of the American people but very significant for China and Russia due to their own separatist movements?A new resolution should be passed allowing for EU forces to enter Kosovo and insisting on the implementation of standards before any final status outcome.Take one step at a time because if you go for broke you might end up with egg on your face just like Bush has from his immigration plan being dead on arrival. How ironic that the UN is pushing for Greeks and Turks to reconcile in Cyprus after 30 years of division at the same time it is dealing with secession in Kosovo?Maybe 30 years from now it will be pushing for the Serbs and Albanians to reconcile. As the saying goes"time heals all wounds".Shalom

You may argue all you wish; by all means continue. However, the fundamentals of the arguments for and against an independent kosovo are proving to be ignored for personal satisfaction. Do not delude yourselves, the fate of kosovo is not in Serbia's hands, anymore. The overwhelming majority of Kosovo and Europe demand Kosovo be an independent country. Serbia lost Kosovo after Milosevic committed crimes in kosovo in the 90s, how can you try to reclaim it when those who dictated the attack are still being protected by the Serb government.

Then there are the russians, which are completely delusional in making people believe that their intentions of a veto is because of a slavic brotherhood they correlate with the serbs, they are clearly using the veto as a bargaining tool for the anti-rocket launchers in eastern europe

Now I hear that the majority of the serb population regard the kosovo status issue as 4th on their national issue list. Is the serbian government doing what the bush administration did, dwell in partiotic issues historic monuments to turn the populations thoughts on the deteriorating economy.

This is the end of the road for this 'resolution'. It's either going to be adopted, with the clause for independence at the end of 120 days or Pristina declares it after Monday's session.

Why it takes Serbia this long to recognize reality is a wonder to all of us monitoring Kosova's development.

Gosh, even 59% of Serbs polled by CESID believed Kosova ranks 5th in nationally important issues. And, only pensioners and housewives believe Serbia should go to war over this issue. To all the Serbs in the diaspora, What does this say about Serbian people?

Right, they recognize reality before those leaders who USE issues like Kosova to divert their public's attention from more dire and pressing issues like that corruption in government and among many of these leaders. The wealth accumulated by these same leaders, acquired unethically and to the detriment of their people's welfare and security.

What's it gonna take to wake up Serbian leaders to THE FACTS that a majority of Serbian people want their leaders to prioritize the development of the jobs and living standards of their people?

Joe - I have nothing to celebrate either way. My stance is not that Kosovo should be predominantly Albanian - it already is in terms of the population.

My stance is that people have fought and died for centuries to change or keep borders in Europe, and the day that the US is allowed to wave its arm and give another country's territory to a group of people seeking independence is an extremely dangerous day for us all!

Kate,
Don't worry. Nothing can alter "Serbian" Kosovo. God, Russia, king Lazar are on your side. You also have Kostunica, who declared that everything is just peachy. EU, USA, UN all showed sufficiently by now that they are pretty inpuissant against fortress Serbia. So you can celebrate.

The process of the Kosova independence has been started by the crimes committed against its population by Serbia.

This is why it will not set a precedent for any countries.

As far as Ruecker, haven’t you all seen a pattern? Every administrator sent to Kosova by the UN turns against Serbia after they spend some time on the ground in Kosova. Of course, this is after they see the destructive policy of Serbia towards this region.

Instead of looking for a better way of life for citizens of Kosova (by simply leaving them alone), Serbia hopes that it will get its colony back (yup, it was always a colony) so they can continue their colonialist policy.

After all, remember the protests in the 60’s “Trepca radi, Beograd se gradi”…

For the residents of Kosova, it is simple: “Never again!”

"The Western states wish to see the status issue settled as soon as possible through adoption of a new UN resolution. They have to date come up with four drafts that all suggested a form of supervised independence for the province. "

If they really wanted to see a resolution asap then would be as simple as submitting a 5th resolution that offered "supervised autonomy"
- I am certain that would be passed on Monday if they wanted it done.

The reality for Tuesday will be;
No Independence
No Illegal declaration
No Illegal recognition
No Violence - thats what NATO is there for.

Think Kate was onto something when she said "supervised autonomy" and it is likely that if new talks do not get underway the the fudge in September is likely to be just that. All that will be different is that EU had taken the MIK out of the UNMIK to become EUMIK but Serbia's sovereignity will remain! One wonders if the status quo could last another 8 years or if it could surpass it?

If Kosovo is NOT part of the Serbia why do you have to wait for Serbs to "get it"? What are you waiting for us? Why don't you proclaim independence and than see where chips fall? You are constantly saying that Kosovo is not Serbian but you can NOT bypass UN and international law (that you want to be part of) without SERBIA. So keep going soon you are going to relize that Kosovo IS legaly part of Serbia and that under NO blackmail Serbs are willing to let it go. Reality is going to hit you so hard and than you will have to ask for money back from those who promissed you Kosovo and had no right to do so!

Eagle - Kosovo legally remains part of Serbia which is exactly why no country wants to move without a UN mandate.

The EU would never take over the mission on the ground until they have all their ducks in a row - ie. a UN resolution in place.

PLUS any resolution will include the staged and secure return of over 150,000 Serbian and other people and other conditions of 1244.

Everything needs to be completed properly. The only way that this will happen is either through partition (which everyone is against) or through some form of supervised autonomy.

Everyone, except maybe Bush, accepts that independence of a sovereign province cannot be gifted to any group of people.

All they're doing is debating - that's it & that's all. KosovO is an integral part of Serbia's history and will continue to remain a part of Serbian land.

to eagle,

So two options, Ruecker said it just to speed up the process, even though no real threat exists. Or, Ruecker is just sending threats to UNSC to get the result he wants. Which one is it?

Lilly is still dreaming of independence...

I hope you won´t be too angry in the end.
unilateral steps would be the last nail in the coffin named "independence".

With all due respect to you. But there are 7 milion Serbs in that same country with a strong will to keep Kosovo within their borders. Through all your hypocrisy you still managed to admit that Serbs have the legal and with that every right to keep Kosovo. Russia will back that and secure it with Georgia.
