Serbia’s expectations from Partnership
Koštunica said that the invitation to join the Partnership is the first result of Serbia’s new approach to international diplomacy, and that the international community has realized that posing conditions in not the best way to integrate Serbia.“In some way this could lead to the conclusion that it would be good to continue the stabilization and association discussions with the EU in this way, but I think that it may influence this process as well.” Koštunica said.
Serbia’s NATO ambassador Branislav Milinković also agreed that the Partnership membership will strengthen Serbia’s position.
He told B92 that the unconditional invitation does not mean that anyone has forgotten about Hague cooperation. He said that this will be used as pressure on Belgrade until it is completed.
“Within the Partnership for Peace there are programs that can be of use and which countries can take something from. If there is an impression that the obligation to the Tribunal is being ignored, then we will not be able to use these programs. That is the difference.” Milinković said.
He also said that even though there is a new air of optimism blowing into Serbia’s sails, it is very unlikely that Serbia will become a NATO member in its 2008 expansion.
