Secrecy for the sake of security

UNMIK was not keen on the idea of letting Koštunica visit Gazimestan yesterday, because such a trip would include numerous security risks. The decision on whether Koštunica will visit Gazimestan is expected to be made at the last moment and depends on the further development of the situation.

The Kosovo Government is still vehemently protesting the visit of the Serbian Prime Minister.

Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku said that his government was not able to allow or stop Koštunica’s visit.

“I believe that this visit will not represent anything more than a religious ceremony. If Koštunica wanted to provoke the people of Kosovo with this visit, then we will definitely not respond to the provocation. ” Ceku said.

The Self-Determination Movement has called on all Kosovo citizens to use all methods to block the border crossing in Merdare and the road leading to Priština. The tensions resulting from Koštunica’s plans to visit have increased so drastically in the past several days that KFOR has decided to mobilise a large number of police forces that have been dormant for some time now.

The roads going through the north of Priština, which lead to Gazimestan and Gračanica and which many Serbs will be using today, are being secured with KFOR tanks.

KFOR official Pio Sabeta is trying to convince the people of Kosovo that this is nothing to worry about, and that the situation in Kosovo is secure.

“What I want to stress is that nothing has changed as far as the security situation is concerned.” Sabeta said.
